A structured, personalised approach to complex and persistent health concerns

Functional Medicine takes a broader view of health, looking at how medical conditions, nutrition, lifestyle, hormonal health, sleep, stress, activity and other factors may interact and contribute to how you feel.

As a Consultant Rheumatologist and certified Functional Medicine doctor, I combine conventional medical expertise with a wider assessment of the factors that may be influencing your health.

The aim is to understand the whole picture, identify what matters most, and develop a clear and realistic plan for moving forward.

THERE IS RARELY ONE “ROOT CAUSE”

Complex or longstanding health concerns rarely come down to one hidden problem.

Health is usually influenced by a combination of factors. Some may be medical, some related to lifestyle or environment, and some may not be modifiable at all.

My approach is therefore not about searching indefinitely for one abnormal test result that explains every symptom.

Instead, we work to:

  • understand your medical history and current health

  • identify the factors most likely to be contributing

  • distinguish what is important from what may not be

  • prioritise the areas that can realistically be changed

  • develop a manageable plan and assess your response over time

Testing and supplements can sometimes be useful, but they are not the focus of the programme and are not automatically recommended.

IS THIS program RIGHT FOR ME?

The Functional Medicine Programme is for adults with persistent or complex health concerns who want a broader, more joined-up approach and are prepared to take an active role in improving their health.

It may be suitable if you want to understand what may be contributing to your health, where best to focus your efforts, and are willing to consider changes to nutrition, physical activity, sleep and recovery where appropriate.

It may not be the right fit if you are primarily looking for a single test or “root cause” to explain multiple symptoms, extensive testing without a clear clinical reason, supplements as the main solution, or a quick fix without addressing relevant lifestyle factors.

If your main concern is joint pain, swelling or a possible inflammatory or autoimmune rheumatological condition, a standard Rheumatology Consultation may be more appropriate.

THE 12-WEEK FUNCTIONAL MEDICINE PROGRAMME

Functional Medicine care is provided as a structured 12-week programme rather than individual short appointments.

This allows enough time to understand your history, decide what is genuinely important, implement a plan and review how you respond.

1. COMPREHENSIVE MEDICAL ASSESSMENT — 60 MINUTES

Before your appointment, you will complete a detailed health questionnaire and provide relevant previous results and medical information.

During your consultation we will review:

  • your medical history and current diagnoses

  • your main health concerns and priorities

  • previous investigations and treatments

  • medications and supplements

  • nutrition and metabolic health

  • physical activity and exercise

  • sleep and recovery

  • hormonal health where relevant

  • other factors that may be contributing to your health

We will identify the areas that appear most important and agree the initial priorities for your plan.

Further investigations may be recommended where they are likely to provide useful information or change management.

Not everyone requires additional testing.

2. review & Strategy CONSULTATION — 45 MINUTES

At your second consultation we will review your progress and any investigation results where applicable.

We will then develop or refine your personalised strategy.

Depending on your individual needs, this may include:

  • nutrition

  • physical activity and exercise

  • sleep and recovery

  • stress management

  • metabolic health

  • supplements where appropriate

  • medical treatment or optimisation

  • coordination with your GP, NHS team or other specialists where required

The emphasis is on identifying a manageable number of priorities rather than trying to change everything at once.

3. PROGRESS REVIEW — 30 MINUTES

Your final consultation is an opportunity to assess how you have responded over the course of the programme.

We will review:

  • what has improved

  • what has not changed

  • which interventions have been useful

  • any difficulties implementing the plan

  • whether anything needs to be adjusted

  • your priorities going forward

We will then agree whether you can continue independently or whether further medical or specialist follow-up would be useful.

PRIVATE MEDICAL INSURANCE

Functional Medicine is a self-funded service and cannot be provided within a standard private health-insurance consultation.

Insurance-funded appointments are provided for conventional specialist care within the scope and appointment duration authorised by your insurer.

If you are seeking a Functional Medicine assessment, please apply through the Functional Medicine Programme rather than booking an insurance-funded appointment.

INTERESTED IN THE PROGRAMME?

Because Functional Medicine involves a significant commitment of both time and effort, I ask all prospective patients to complete a short suitability questionnaire before booking.

This allows me to understand:

  • your main health concerns

  • what you have already investigated

  • what you are hoping to achieve

  • whether this programme is likely to be the most appropriate service for you

Completing the questionnaire does not commit you to booking the programme.

If the programme appears appropriate for your needs, you will be sent details to arrange your initial appointment and programme payment.
